timeline

buckle up everypony its time for a lore dump

this timeline includes both canon events and my headcanons. if a canon event isn’t listed, it’s safe to assume it happened as normal.

pre-equestria

  • all three pony tribes are separate kingdoms
  • king sombra is born as prince sapphire, and grows up to be king of the unicorns and princess platinum’s father
  • starswirl the bearded is born
  • celestia and luna are born in the unicorn kingdom
  • the friendship fire is created by clover the clever, smart cookie, and private pansy. negotiations begin to create equestria, where all three races can live together
  • clover the clever, starswirl’s former apprentice, fathers stygian with an unknown mare
  • princess amore of the pegasus kingdom founds the crystal empire
  • celestia and luna receive their cutie marks and ascend to alicorns after raising the sun/moon for the first time
  • together with the rulers of the tribes, they create equestria and are crowned princesses

ancient equestria

  • lord tirek and scorpan attempt to steal pony magic. tirek is betrayed and sent to tartarus
  • the dazzlings, a trio of sirens, try to invade and are sent to the human world
  • former-king sapphire kidnaps celestia and luna during a now-ancient festival. he steals their subject’s outpour of love for the sisters and uses it to ascend into an alicorn, naming himself king sombra
  • starswirl saps king sombra’s alicorn magic into an artifact that became the alicorn amulet. sombra escapes using shadow magic
  • still more powerful than before his ascension, sombra creates penumbra and leaves her to sleep in the everfree forest until he needs her once more
  • stygian becomes the pony of shadows, and the pillars imprison themselves in limbo with him. beforehand, they plant the seeds of the tree of harmony
  • discord takes over and causes chaos. celestia and luna take the elements from the tree of harmony and use it to turn him to stone
  • king sombra takes over the crystal empire. celestia and luna turn him to shadow and defeat him, right before the empire disappears
  • luna transforms into nightmare moon. celestia uses the elements to banish her to the moon

pre-canon era

  • princess cadence is born a pegasus in canterlot and abandoned by her parents. she’s adopted by earth ponies. she ascends to an alicorn and is adopted as a niece by celestia after reversing a love-stealing spell
  • ponyville is founded by granny smith’s family after she discovers zap apples
  • the mane 6 & others (their siblings, starlight, sunset shimmer, etc.) are born
  • sunset shimmer becomes celestia’s student. after a year of study, she runs away to the human world at 13 years old
  • fizzlepop berrytwist (tempest shadow) loses her horn
  • shining armor starts dating cadence, who then becomes twilight’s foal-sitter
  • rainbow dash performs her first sonic rainboom. the mane six get their cutie marks. twilight sparkle becomes the youngest filly to ever be admitted to celestia's school
  • appleloosa is founded. this is the last event that happens before canon. there’s a year-ish jump from here to the first episode

canon era: seasons 1-3

  • twilight is sent to ponyville and the mane six become the bearers of the elements of harmony
  • luna returns in her pre-ascension form as a result of the elements stripping nightmare moon’s magic from her. she creates the tantabus shortly after, and begins gaining her own magic back
  • rainbow dash performs her second sonic rainboom, making her the first pony to ever do it more than once
  • discord returns. the mane six defeat him
  • pound and pumpkin cake are born
  • changelings invade canterlot and are defeated with the power of love. cadence and shining armor are married
  • king sombra returns, the ponies use the power of the crystal heart to defeat him. he doesn't have time to call upon penumbra, her slumber is undisturbed
  • trixie lulamoon uses the alicorn amulet in an attempt to challenge twilight sparkle
  • discord begins his reformation
  • twilight casts starswirl’s unfinished spell, causing her friends to get different cutie marks
    • they still get them at the same time, when filly rarity’s horn shoots off magic so fast it creates a sonic rainboom
    • this is a full timeline divergence and the mane five have no memories of their original selves
    • applejack and pinkie pie swap places on the apple family tree, applejack is a distant cousin instead
    • if i get bored enough this might be the jumping off point for timeline au shenanigans
  • twilight ascends with the love of her friends as a catalyst

equestria girls

  • everything here takes place around season 3-5 i think. grouping them together here
  • i have changed a lot about the world. for more info, see this page
  • first movie
    • sunset shimmer steals twilight’s crown, twilight goes to the human world, defeats and reforms sunset
    • the fall formal is replaced with voting for a student senate type deal. the crown was pitched as a joke prop for the president that stuck
    • during sunset’s attempted takeover, the dazzlings notice the equestrian magic and start to scheme
    • sci-twi begins researching the strange happenings at canterlot college after seeing posts online featuring the magic
  • rainbow rocks: the dazzlings attempt to turn canterlot college into a magic generator by turning the coffeehouse event into a battle of the bands. twilight returns to the human world to help defeat them
  • friendship games
    • canterlot college vs crystal state university. who will win. one’s got magic, so...
    • sci-twi transforms into midnight sparkle and then is befriended by sunset. she decides to transfer to canterlot college and change her major
  • legends of everfree doesn’t happen. its a dumb movie. the songs slap though

canon era: seasons 4-5

  • the elements of harmony are returned to the tree, and the chest of harmony is created
  • the mane five earn their keys of harmony
  • maud pie runs into starlight glimmer while she’s building her town
  • the equestria games are held at the crystal empire
  • lord tirek escapes tartarus and tries to drain equestria’s magic. twilight obtains her key of harmony and the mane six are granted rainbow power to imprison tirek again
  • golden oak library is destroyed during tirek’s attack. however, instead of an ugly castle, the chest plants itself and grows into a slightly larger, crystal-infused oak tree, looking more natural than artificial
  • the mane six discover starlight glimmer’s village (and cult). they release the cutie marks from the vault. starlight escapes
  • the mane five try to cheer up twilight, who’s been avoiding the crystal oak library because it reminds her of golden oak and the trauma of tirek’s takeover. episode resolves as canon, with golden oak’s remains turned into a chandelier. and twilight goes to therapy.
  • equestria starts to negotiate allyship with griffonstone after the map summons dash and pinkie
  • slice of life happens :]
  • equestria becomes allies with yakyakistan
  • rarity furthers her fashion career with a new boutique in canterlot
  • the cmc get their marks and make history as the first ponies to have extremely similar marks, as well as being the second group to get theirs at the same time (the first being the mane six)
  • the cutie re-mark: time travel shenanigans whopee!
    • in those timelines, the mane six have different cutie marks than canon
    • in events where one villain had to have been defeated in order for another to take over (ex. nightmare moon isn’t present in the changeling timeline) the elements of harmony were wielded by either celestia, luna, or another group of ponies
    • once again, a jumping off point for time travel shenanigans

canon era: seasons 6-7

  • flurry heart is born, the first natural alicorn in history. starlight reunites with sunburst. the crystal heart is broken and then restored with the crystal ponies’ love
  • ember becomes the dragon lord, succeeding her dad torch
  • rainbow dash becomes a full wonderbolt
  • spike befriends thorax in 'the times they are a changeling'
  • starlight’s village holds the sunset festival, changelings are reformed, thorax becomes the leader
  • maud moves to ponyville
  • the sweet feather sanctuary opens
  • starlight glimmer is able to swap the cutie marks of the two most powerful ponies in equestria. this catches the princesses’ attention
  • grand pear reunites with the apple family
  • the cmc open the cutie mark day camp
  • it’s discovered that the pillars trapped themselves in limbo. they’re freed, stygian is rescued, and the pillars stay in modern equestria
  • mlp the movie: i have a lot of worldbuilding issues with this movie, but everything happens roughly the same, except there are no giant cats. hippogriffs/seaponies make contact with equestria, and tempest shadow is reformed. she stays in canterlot to figure herself out

canon era: seasons 8-9

  • twilight opens the school of friendship
  • maud starts dating mudbriar
  • starlight and sunburst return to sire's hollow in 'the parent map'
  • spike grows wings
  • cozy glow leaves her abusive home in fillydelphia to enroll at the school of friendship, the beginnings of a magic-draining scheme in her mind
  • queen chrysalis attempts to control the elements of harmony with clones of the mane 6, but the tree destroys them
  • rockhoof is appointed as equestria's keeper of tales
  • the young 6 are tested by the tree of harmony
  • flutterhy and applejack discover and help the kirin
  • cozy glow tries to drain the magic from equestria. the tree of harmony helps the young 6 defeat her. cozy is temporarily imprisoned in tartarus to scare her before anypony attempts to talk sense into her, but season nine begins just a few days later
  • celestia and luna announce they will retire soon. discord, acting as grogar, assembles a team of sombra, chrysalis, tirek, and cozy glow. sombra decides to take over the crystal empire on his own, destroys the elements & tree of harmony, and is defeated by the mane 6
  • applejack and rainbow dash finally realize how in love they are, and start dating
  • the young 6 turn the remains of the tree of harmony into a treehouse, representing a new era of harmony
  • scootaloo's terrible parents let their daughther be legally adopted by holiday and lofty, who move to ponyville to take care of her full-time
  • the last summer sun celebration is held, and twilight creates the festival of the two sisters to replace it
  • starlight is promoted to headmare of the school of friendship, sunburst the vice headmare, and trixie as the new guidance counselor
  • big mac and sugar belle get married
  • tirek, chrysalis, and cozy cause chaos and temporarily take over the world. students from the school of friendship reunite equestria and help the mane 6 & etc. to defeat the villains, who are imprisoned in stone
  • twilight is crowned queen of equestria and establishes the council of friendship. celestia and luna retire to silver shoals
  • cozy glow is freed from stone and begins her reformation. starlight glimmer, diamond tiara, and the cmc work together to show her what her cutie mark really means
  • twilight takes over the school of gifted unicorns
  • rainbow dash proposes to applejack. she says yes, of course.

post-canon era: a few years later

  • tempest shadow chooses to go by fizzlepop berrytwist again, and works a few odd jobs to try and find a purpose. she gains her cutie mark while working at an ice cream parlor
  • lyra and bon bon have their wedding
  • rarity opens a non-pony boutique and hires yona to manage it
  • the cmc become teachers at the school of friendship, specializing in cutie mark theory
  • gallus becomes captain of the canterlot royal guard
  • starlight, sunburst, and trixie start dating
  • luster dawn is born, her three parents marry shortly after
  • apple cupcake, dusklight and lil cheese are born
  • inspired by pinkie, cheese, and fluttershy's fertility journey, twilight starts a research project on a foal-making spell. silver spanner is hired to help with the mechanical portion of the spell
  • sky stinger and vapor trail break up. zephyr breeze begins dating sky stinger and becomes dusklight's stepfather
  • after it comes to light that both discord and fluttershy thought they were married but nopony else realized, they get married for realsies
  • sunset shimmer and sci-twi get married and have gyro compass
  • twilight goes out with spike for some ice cream and ends up chatting with fizzlepop. they start dating

post-canon era: a few more years later

  • the foal-making spell enters its testing phase. among the first couples to volunteer are:
    • silver spanner, ink rose, and hoof-tapper. they have enigma, a naturally-born alicorn, but decide to keep it a secret for enigma's safety, and report that the birth was normal
    • applejack and rainbow dash. they have zap apple and florina
    • rarity, party popper, and double diamond. they have bouquet and snowshoe, who are conjoined twins
    • lyra and bon bon. they have marshmallow twist, who is born without a back right leg
    • starlight and trixie. they have ribbonforth, who is born non-disabled but steadily loses her vision as she grows
    • other couples volunteer as well. about a fourth of the foals born are disabled, causing the spell to undergo more testing
  • once it is guaranteed the spell doesn't give birth to disabled foals at such a large rate (but it still does occasionally because fuck eugenics), it's released to fertility doctors across equestria
  • thanks to queen twilight and her newly-promoted head scientist silver spanner, even more technological advancements are introduced to equestria, including more advanced prosthetics and mobility aids
  • crystal aurora is born. shining armor and cadence hand the throne over to flurry heart in order to care for him

twilight's reign

  • sunset shimmer takes a teenage gyro compass through the portal and introduces him to equestria. he quickly becomes enamored with the world and spends increasing amount of time there
